Mike Stern - Upside Downside

Ries van Schelven writes about Mike Stern's 1986 Atlantic releasse Upside Downside, "Overall, an excellent album, with mainly an electric sound. It start off with the title track, which features great guitar work - pretty heavy for jazz, I would say, but I like that. Nice speed, nice build-up, it really kicks ass. On to a nice compostion called "Little Shoes", featuring Stern with a good overdriven solo. Tune down time, "Goodbye Again" - beautiful intro, nice sax work. Some up tempo music follows with "Mood Swings". What can I say... kicks ass. Then it's ballad time with "After You", my favourite. Stern shows his feeling here - every note counts, beautiful phrasing. Upside Downside finishes of with "Scuffle", a great rhythmic piece featuring Jaco Pastorius on bass - and probably the best solo of this album." Instrumental Guitar (Electric/Fusion/Jazz), total running time, 35:38

Albert Collins, Robert Cray & Johnny Copeland

Call it three for the price of one. Far from engaging in a guitar-playing shootout, Albert Collins, Robert Cray, and Johnny Copeland work together incredibly well, achieving a kind of musical synergy that's rarely heard. Copeland and Cray handle most of the vocal duties, and Cray's smooth, soul-tinged voice (positively shiver-eliciting on "The Dream," as is Collins's lead guitar work) complements Copeland's growl perfectly. Collins doesn't get to sing as much, but he more than makes up for it with his harmonica on the slow blues "Bring Your Fine Self Home." And of course, all three turn in stellar guitar work, trading solos and rhythm parts with the greatest of ease; Cray was a relative newcomer at the time of this recording, but he more than holds his own. One would be hard pressed to find a better blues collaboration anywhere.

Robert Johnson - The Legendary Blues Singer

Johnny Guitar Watson: the Hits - 2006

Buddy Guy - Sweet Tea

Personnel includes: Buddy Guy (vocals, guitar); Jimbo Mathus (guitar); Bobby Whitlock (piano); Davey Faragher (bass); Spam, Sam Carr, Pete Thomas (drums); Craig Krampf (percussion). Recorded at Sweet Tea Studios, Oxford, Mississippi. Includes liner notes by Andy Schwartz. SWEET TEA was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Over the years, blues guitar hero Buddy Guy has embraced everything from Chicago blues to R&B and pop balladry, always retaining his hardcore blues underpinning and fretboard wizardry as touchstones. While SWEET TEA represents a significant stylistic detour for Guy, it's a surprisingly familiar one. Seemingly inspired by the raw, electrified Mississippi blues of Fat Possum recording artists such as R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, Guy presents one of the most impassioned, gritty albums of his career. A couple of musicians from the Fat Possum camp are on board to lend ballast, but the heart of the sound is the titanic fury of Guy's guitar. The album opens with a low-key solo acoustic tune ("Done Got Old") in the manner of John Lee Hooker, but from there on it's no holds barred, as Guy delivers simple, slashing riffs and leads over pounding, primal rhythms in a Delta-meets-Chicago stew that's transcendently visceral. While blues-rockers like Led Zeppelin and Cream got rich by turbo-charging the riffs of vintage bluesmen like Guy, the guitar wizard turns the tables here by beating them at their own game. The pure, blazing, electric energy on these tracks makes the heaviest efforts of those bygone bands sound like Gerry & the Pacemakers. Kudos to Guy for making such a gutsy album so late in the game.

Kool Jazz Live From Midem - 1983

This unusual compilation from the Kool Jazz at Midem Festival combines parts of three separate sets. The Dave Brubeck Quartet with clarinetist Bill Smith, bassist Chris Brubeck and drummer Randy Jones, has the most interesting program, utilizing an electronic delay along with Smith's clarinet to add a new touch to "Lover Man," offering an energetic version of "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and introducing a recent work by Brubeck, the very swinging "Ol' Bill Basie" which showcases some fine playing by the leader and some choice bass trombone by son Chris. Guitarist Pat Metheny joins the Heath Brothers for "Move To The Groove; " Metheny's bluesy guitar and Jimmy Heath's soulful tenor sax work well together. B. B. King's set is at best average and an odd choice to include on what is predominantly a jazz record. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Mike Stern - Who Let The Cats Out? (2006)

Mike Stern, one of the most recognized and celebrated guitarists of his generation, is back with Who Let The Cats Out?? On Stern's thirteenth release as a leader, the award winning three-time GRAMMY nominee continues to blur the boundaries between jazz, funk, blues and rock with eleven unique originals. "This record is a return to more instrumental playing, more blowing," says Stern. "In some ways it's straight ahead, but filtered through my rock and blues influences. I'm still interested in incorporating vocals, so I wanted Richard Bona to sing on my record. I composed the tunes thinking about which musicians would work best for each track. It seemed organic, and I think worked out well." Who Let The Cats Out?? was recorded in January 2006 and features a stunning lineup including bassists Richard Bona (who handles vocals on two tracks), Anthony Jackson, Meshell Ndegeocello, Chris Minh Doky and Victor Wooten, trumpeter Roy Hargrove, saxophonists Bob Franceschini and Bob Malach, drummers Dave Weckl and Kim Thompson, harmonica player Gregoire Maret, and keyboardist/producer Jim Beard. George Lynch - Sacred Groove

Originally recorded and released with the backing of major label (Elektra), now rereleased through Wounded Bird, George Lynch's 1993 solo album, Sacred Groove, features six vocal numbers, and four remarkable instrumental tracks ("Tierra Del Fuego", "Love Power From the Power Head", "Memory Jack" and "I Will Remember"). "Tierra Del Fuego" is significant because it features major shred, as Lynch jams with Long Beach guitar monster Derryl Gabel, who won a contest to jam with Lynch on this track. "I Will Remember" offers a soulful, almost neo-classical groove, while "Love Power From the Power Head" is an explosive track in the Joe Satriani and Tony MacAlpine vein. A number of guest vocalists also make appearances on Sacred Groove - an essential addition to a George Lynch fan's collection. Hard Rock, total running time, 46:46

Greg Howe's Hyperacuity finds the Pennsylvania based shredder delving deeper into the experimental fusion idiom, soloing over advanced rhythmic patterns and adventurous chord progressions. The tracks hearken back to Howe's first few Shrapnel releases, filled with high-tech guitarmanship and musical interplay among the trio of Howe, drummer Kevin Soffera and bassist Dale Fischer. Guitarist Prashant Aswani makes a guest appearance on acoustic guitar on "Order Of Dawn", which also opens with a 1:28 minute drum solo, courtesy of Soffera. Howe/Wooten/Chambers - Extraction

Greg Howes first record, critically acclaimed by the guitar cognoscenti, was voted by readers of Guitar Player Magazine as one of the best two records of that year. Throughout the decade Greg has developed his style further and has amassed a legion of fans which have led him to gigs as a guitarist for Michael Jackson, Enrique Englesias, NSync and Justin Timberlake. Gregs solo albums have always been laden with musical integrity and have inspired many. Extraction brings him together with bassist Victor Wooten who has carved out a brilliant career as a solo artist, music educator and as a member of the critically acclaimed Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Dennis Chambers is known for his work with Steely Dan, Parliament, Funkadelic, John McLaughlin, and Santana. Each musician on this CD is arguably the best at what they do and they are three of the most three of the most respected players in the circle of musicians musicians. Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughan - In Session

Aca les dejo este gran disco de estos virtuosos del Blues

Recorded for a television program of the same name back in 1983, In Session bills itself as the only known recording of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert King, who was Vaughan's idol and mentor, playing together. That leads to some heavy expectations, which fortunately aren't disappointed, at least if you aren't expecting the customary over-the-top performances Vaughan was famous for. His playing here is much more laid-back and controlled, which is actually a recommendation--the stylistic similarities between teacher and student are that much more pronounced. The songs are mostly King concert staples, with the exception of "Pride and Joy"; highlights include the T-Bone Walker classic "Call It Stormy Monday" and one of King's own, "Overall Junction," which features some excellent guitar solo work.

Jeffology - A Guitar Chronicle (TRIBUTO JEFF BECK)

Jeffology: A Guitar Chronicle is a tribute to Jeff Beck, one of the greatest blues/rock guitar players in rock history, and features Gregg Bissonette, Bruce Bouillet, Vivian Campbell, Phil Collen, Warren DeMartini, Tony Franklin, Paul Gilbert, Jake E. Lee, Steve Lukather, George Lynch, Mick Mars and more! Only five of the eleven songs are instrumental ("Led Boots" with Campbell, "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" with Collen, "Head For Backstage Pass" with Bouillet, "Rice Pudding" with Lee, and "Behind The Veil" with Lukather), a bit odd since Beck was more noted for his instrumentals, and didn't sing himself for the most part. However a fine collection of tracks in honor of the legendary, influential English guitarist. Fusion, total running time, 50:54
